So I officially have too many gym memberships, and I cannot decide how to move forward with deciding which one to keep! Help!
Here's the situation:
1. I have a membership to Retro Fitness, which is a gym franchise in the NY/NJ area. My memberships "resides" with the location down at the shore near my house, but I can go to any Retro Fitness with my membership, there are some of these gyms in North Jersey, near my job. Fee is $19.99/month. I've been using Retro for over 4 years, they have plenty of standard equipment but do not offer classes.
2. I just joined New York Sports Club upon moving to Hoboken. What I intended on doing was to trial the gym for January, and see what happened. I got convinced to joining, because I can't say no to people. The gym is great: there are a ton of classes, spin rooms, sauna, space, machines, equipment, kettle bells for days, nice locker room, etc. It's a pretty hefty price (of what I am used to paying) of something like $65/month.. but all the additional classes and offerings they have certainly make it worth the money!
3. My new job has a fitness center in their building! The membership fee comes directly out of your paycheck (comes to about $20/month), they have the standard machines, weights, space, access to a personal trainer, shower, and a few classes. They are open early enough for me to go before work and I can go right after work, but they are not open late.
4. Our apartment building JUST re-opened their fitness center, which is FREE.The center had been flooded out since Sandy, and they just re-opened a brandy new space. It's new and clean but very simple, minimal amount of machines and weights. But it is FREE and in our building for WHENEVER I want to use it!
My gut is telling me to go with option #3, plus the additional benefit of the freebie #4. Though #2 has great offerings and other locations in the area where I can go as well... But I am not sure my wallet can justify that!
What do you think? What would you do?

Do you like taking classes? Do you take other classes outside the gym? If classes are your thing, I'd go with No. 2. But if you take other classes anyways, I'd do 3 and 4 :)
ReplyDeleteI think Option #3 (including the obvious #4). Since it is only $20, it leaves some room for taking boutique fitness classes once in a while if you have any you love!
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough one. It depends on what you really want to do or accomplish. I love having the option to take a variety of classes, having access to so many different types of equipment, so I don't get bored, plus the sauna and steam room are icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteI would pick Option 2 and 4. But I happen to be a member of NYSC (so I'm a little biased ;)) and it is only a couple of blocks from my job, so I go in the morning before work. I also go on the weekends, so I like the fact that there are so many gyms around the city.
Sounds like you have some great options!
Planet Fitness + Option 4! ...and you need to email/inbox me missy! Where are you living?? So excited that you've move to Hoboken :)
